The Swallow – Poem by Ghazaros Aghayan (1840-1911)

The Swallow

The swallow slowly builds her nest,
Her voice unravelling.
With every twig, with every leaf,
She yearns for last year’s home.

She remembers her young chicks,
Hungry for her return.
A wolf snatched the chicks away,
And devoured their tender flesh.

But the swallow again builds her nest,
Her voice unravelling.
With every twig, with every leaf,
She remembers last year’s song.

Translated from the Armenian by Judith Saryan
